Are you a police officer?

I've been asked if I'm in the military many times, but I've never been asked if I'm a police officer. I was asked that question twice today, once by the mechanic who was fixing something in my apartment, and then later by a woman at the neighborhood convenience store. I wonder what it is about me today that would bring that question up?
